Royal Enfield Origin: Journey from England to India and Now in Bangladesh

Albert Eadie and Robert Walker Smith are the known founders of Royal Enfield. In November 1891, both these entrepreneurs bought George Townsend & Co., a well-respected needle manufacturer who had recently started manufacturing bicycles. Fast-forward to 1901, when Bob Walker Smith and Frenchman Jules Gobiet designed the first Royal Enfield motorcycle. The motorcycle was launched at the Stanley Cycle Show in London. Therefore, the origin of Royal Enfield is known to be in Worcestershire, England.

How did Royal Enfield come to India?

Royal Enfield began production in India in 1955 when the Indian government ordered 500 350cc bullets for its Army. To meet this demand, Royal Enfield collaborated with Madras Motors in India to form Enfield India. By 1952, Enfield India was manufacturing the entire motorcycle domestically.

Meanwhile, in 1970 Royal Enfield stopped its production in the UK. As they were facing financial difficulties and declining sales during the late 1960s, which eventually led to the closure of its UK factory.

Eicher Motors acquired Enfield India in 1994. Eicher Motors took control of the company and later rebranded it as Royal Enfield. Under Eicher’s ownership, Royal Enfield was revitalized, shifting from a niche player into a global brand known for its retro-style motorcycles, like the Classic and the Meteor.

Currently, Royal Enfield is an all-India brand, keeping along its original English heritage as well. The Royal Enfield Global headquarters is located in Tiruvottiyur, Chennai. Three manufacturing plants are located in Chennai, and four assembly plants are in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Thailand.
